The Rocky Mount Police Department has officially received its initial accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission.
The award was presented to the department Dec. 5 during a ceremony in Yorktown, marking a significant milestone in the department’s commitment to excellence in law enforcement, according to a town news release.
Accreditation recognizes the department’s dedication to maintaining high standards in operations, management, and community service. Achieving accreditation demonstrates the department’s compliance with over 190 best practice standards, designed to enhance public safety, strengthen accountability, and improve the delivery of police services.
“This is a remarkable achievement for our Police Department and for the entire Rocky Mount community,” said Mayor Holland Perdue. “It shows that the Department’s efforts to improve all aspects of the Department have been successful, and we are proud of the Department’s commitment to continuing that improvement and transparency.”
Town Manager Robert Wood said: “This accreditation is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of the officers and staff who serve our citizens. It ensures that our police department is operating at the highest standards and is fully equipped to meet the needs of our community.”
The commission’s accreditation process involves a comprehensive review of law enforcement agencies’ policies, procedures, and practices, assessing everything from use-of-force protocols to training, staffing, and citizen interactions.
The Rocky Mount Police Department underwent a thorough assessment by independent assessors who reviewed every aspect of the department’s operations to ensure compliance with these stringent standards.
“This accreditation validates the hard work and dedication of our officers and staff,” said police Chief Phillip Young. “It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing professional and effective service to the citizens of Rocky Mount while maintaining transparency and accountability.”
